Testimony: Finding the Solution to My Problems By Helping Others With Theirs
By: Alison Brugge
During the summer of 2012, I went to Thailand for a month long mission trip. I went on the mission trip carrying a lot of questions, burdens and concerns about my personal life. While I was in Thailand, God opened my eyes to the truth that my insignificant problems as an American were causing me to be blind to the truth that I was, in reality a truly blessed person.
God did not devalue my problems in this process or make ME feel insignificant, but He did the opposite by uplifting me and encouraging me to overcome my struggles and to move forward as a free person. He lifted the weight of my small problems by showing me the honest struggles that many Thai people face on a daily basis. Then, He gave me compassion to help the Thai people in any way I could. He showed me that if I lift my eyes from my struggles, I will see that I have the resources, support, and community in my home town that can make a true difference in this world. He showed me that the struggles I had were, in reality, a distraction from the calling He has on my life.
That calling is simply to love Him and love people. He showed me how beautiful the people of Thailand are and how much He cares about them. He showed me that although I don’t have much to offer the Thai people, I can give them my friendship, the truth about His love, and the resources that can help their community grow and flourish.
I left Thailand feeling encouraged. I learned that I don’t have to spend my life overwhelmed by meaningless problems but I can instead reach out to those around me and make a difference in their lives. I can take what I have and use it for the betterment of those who need help, love and support. I can make a difference in this world through my faith and through the resources I possess in my hands.
